Hey Michael – do you have any recommendations for wind resistant/water proof coats. It’s starting to get cold here. I had on a hoodie this morning, but it was so windy that I was still freezing my @$$ off.
They tend to have good deals. I try and aim for being warm and waterproof is kind of bonus. If your commuting, yes you want to stay dry but then I opt for rain gear, which can be bulky if your out for a training ride. In that case I either just get wet, and try and stay warm with a long sleeve jersey or the next layer would be a jacket. I found a decent tight fitting winter jacket from Pearl Izumi under $100.00.
Also you can get one of those thin clear plastic outer shells that many pros put on when its raining.
Check Sierra Trading Post, they also have really good deals and have a cycling section. Then there is always craig’s list and ebay, but cycling close are hard to predict how they are going to fit, especially when you want them tight fitting but not to small. I am kind of in between a large and a medium.
Layering is always key, so if its raining, between spring and deep into fall (before it gets too cold) I found a super light rain jacket made by Under Armour. They are starting to make all kinds of clothes now and prices are reasonable.
I often find clothes that work for cycling in stores that sell outerwear for work. The same kind of stores that sell a lot of carhartt and dickies.
You can also find good affordable raingear in stores and online at EMS, REI and Campmor. (all three strores of cycling sections)
This time of year sucks in the mountains. It’ll be in the high 30’s – mid 40’s in the morning when I go to work, but then it’ll be in the high 70’s – low 80’s when I go home.
