The riders balanced on their fixed gear bikes, wobbling ever so slightly as the race organizer Chris Kim counted down.

“Three, two, one, green light, go!”

The second Midnight Keirin Club race of the year was off. The small pack lurched forward and began churning their pedals around the perimeter of McCarren Park in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It was 10:15 p.m. and they were soon absorbed into the dark at the end of Driggs Avenue.

Mr. Kim held on to each rider’s five dollar entrance fee: the pot would go to the winner.

“People really race for pride,” he explained, “but the money is nice.”
