Critical Mass, Caracas Style

Oski is a 26 year old anarchist bikepunk living in the city of Caracas Venezuela. He documents life there on his tumblr: Things like kidnapping and the violence witnessed while biking in this turbulent city.

On a positive note, their is one event that seems to be bringing the bike community together, Critical Mass.

CARACAS, Venezuela — Start with one of the world’s highest murder rates, add in a mountain setting and some of the cheapest gasoline anywhere, then sprinkle liberally with a hostile and chaotic car culture and you get Caracas, perhaps one of the least bike-friendly cities anywhere.

That hasn’t stopped a small but hardy breed of bike-enthusiasts and cyclo-environmental activists from trying to shake up the city’s transportation scene with the one American import on Caracas’s streets that doesn’t run on a V-8 engine: Critical Mass.
