August events from Time’s Up

Untitled

August is right around the corner and that means lots more summer…summer streets that is. Once again the city will be closing 7 miles of streets to motor vehicles and open to pedestrians, bikes and other non-polluting transportation, the first three Saturdays of August. (8/3, 8/10, 8/17) Time’s Up will be there to ride the route as a group. More information, below in the events listings.

Announcements:

It’s a little late, but we still love this great feel good story where Time’s Up volunteers came to the rescue of cyclists in need. Back in June, a blind Harlem man and his wife had their beloved tandem stolen and Time’s Up came to their aid by raising money for a new ride.

3. SUMMER STREETS
Sunday, August 3rd, 10:00pm
Meet Astor Place
From the Summer Streets website: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/summerstreets/html/home/home.shtml

Summer Streets is an annual celebration of New York City’s most valuable public space-our streets. On three consecutive Saturdays in the summer, nearly seven miles of NYC’s streets are opened for people to play, walk, bike and breathe. Summer Streets provides space for healthy recreation and encourages New Yorkers to use more sustainable forms of transportation. In 2012, more than 250,000 people took advantage of the open streets.

Running from 7:00am -1:00pm, Summer Streets extends from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, along Park Avenue and connecting streets, with easy access from all points in NYC.

Time’s Up will ride the route as a group. Meet at the Astor Place cube at 10:00am.

4. VOLUNTEER BICYCLE RECYCLING DAYS
Wednesdays and Sundays, 4:00pm
Brooklyn Space-99 South 6th St.

Time’s Up has added four new volunteer bicycle recycling days to its calendar of weekly events. On Wednesdays and Sundays from 4:00pm-8:00pm and Thursdays and Fridays from 12:00pm-6:00pm, volunteer mechanics will be recycling and selling bicycles out of the Brooklyn Space.

We need volunteers of all types to help out. We need people to sell bikes, to input bike sales into the computer, to clean the shop and more. If you would like to learn bicycle maintenance this is the perfect event for you too. Come learn to recycle bikes with expert mechanics.

Now that we have 450 Duth-style bikes to recycle, we are also seeking a cheap or free storage space near the Brooklyn space. We need between 300 and 500 square feet to store 450 bicycles as we recycle them. If you have any leads on such a space, please let us know.
