I think feel that bike theft is actually a Hate Crime and should be dealt with accordingly. Maybe caught bike thieves should have to go door to door and apologize or make it known to neighbors they have moved into the area like Megan’s Law.

First one comes from Natalie Johnston:

Hello,

Someone stole my bike last night (as in within the last few hours) from inside my building! The front door was wide open this morning–kinda creepy. I live in Clinton Hill/Bed Stuy. Please post the following information to your blog.
Thank you so much!
-Natalie

My bike was stolen from inside my building last night! Sad and scary. Please help me recover this bike! It is only a few months old but I looked for a couple years before I found one that I liked as much as this one and I can’t afford to buy another bike.

KHS Flite 250
Black
Men’s frame
Straight handlebars with silver bell
Seat is chained down
Looks pretty new

$100 reward.
Thank you.

any info contact: Natalie Johnston, nj_2332@yahoo.com

Then I just got this one from Craig Richards:

Hi Mike,

My friend had his bike stolen on the evening of 20th July. It was
locked up at 10th and C. I’d be grateful if you could add it to your
list of stolen bike please.

This is his posting on Craigslist.

–Some assmaster stole my custom made, heavy, rusty Bologna bike at 10th
& C last night.
I’ll give anyone who returns it $500 cash, no questions asked.
I’ll also give $1k for the thief’s nads on a stick
Yes way.
Heres a photo (of the bike, not the nads) – http://twitpic.com/27e3a1

<img src="http://www.bikeblognyc.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/133347097.jpg" alt="" title="133347097"width="320" height="480" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-8351" />
It’s a lot rustier now, and it has a black seat, black rubber oray
grips, and riser bars.
It’s been passed on from generation to generation in my family for
almost 3,000 years.
I’d really like to give it to my son some day.
And if you’re the thief, and you’re reading this, please give it back.
I’ll give you the five hundred bucks.
Please.
If you don’t, I will call Dog the Bounty Hunter, Bobba Fett, and Bear
Gryls, and they will have a 3 way, and that 3 way will produce a son,
and that son will be raised by Tito Ortiz, and on his 18th birthday,
he and I will come to your house, and fuck your shit up.
Thank you for your time.

I definitley would not want to meet Tito.

My girlfriends bike was stolen this weekend right off of 23rd street btw 2nd and 3rd, right in front of the SVA building. It was a specialized woman’s medium cream colored hybrid bike. Here’s a picture of it.

I understand that there is a very slim chance of recovering the bike, but it can’t hurt to put the word out.

Thanks,

Jared

If you have any information on this bike email: jalupa1@me.com

Universities and schools in NYC seem to be rampant targets for theft. If you are attending these institutions and have a bike stolen you should try and work with security and see if you can acquire video surveillance footage. If you receive a lot of flack for this, you should definitely complain to the administration and question why they even have security in the first place if its not going to be used to help the students. It is good to set a precedence that theft is occurring at the school and begin a discussion about policy. Also, with all bike thefts, it is a good idea to get a police report no matter the condition or value of the stolen bike. The cops won’t be eager to help you with this kind of paper work but its worth perusing in principle and in case of identity purposes. There is a good chance your stolen bike will quickly be turned around on the street for fast cash and likely be acquired by restaurants who do food delivery. Be on the look-out. Don’t be afraid to confront the delivery person directly if you see them using your property. Chances are they won’t put up a fight and be well aware of their actions. Also complain to the business that uses employees who by stolen property. Might not even hurt to put this information on a rating website such as Yelp. This may be where the police report comes in handy to prove ownership of the bike and that it was indeed stolen. Also it is a good idea to take a photo of your ride in advance and keep that documentation in a safe place.
I am asking people who’ve been the victims of bike theft to post to the Brooklyn Bike and Board stolen bike registry. Like me, they are trying to be a resource for people to post bike thefts as written documentation and for the purpose of getting them back.

Here are a couple of other thefts that were sent to me:

Donna Darrell
Stolen: 6/14/10
I was wondering if you can help me. this is my 2nd bike stolen in 2 years and I’m so upset.
I parked it on a pole today 6/14 at 8:25 am. Just looked out the window at 1:50 pm and saw it missing. It was a dark ink midnight blue BIANCHI. Men’s bike. It was from Syd’s bikes. It had seat and wheel locks. Most distinctly it had a basket on the back.

I’m sick.
Just caught a bike thief red handed 2 weeks ago but he got away (and i have his clippers to prove it).

Please help,

Best,

Donna (donnadarrell@gmail.com)

Also I received this one. (sorry to post so late)
I just had my bike stolen from 2 Astor Place in front of the Astor Place Barbers. It was locked, lock was gone with the bike when I got back outside. It is a blue GT Transeo 3.0 with shocks on the front and toe clip pedals. Picture is attached and it is a hybrid, upright bike. On the right handle, the plastic box that covers the cables for shifting is cracked open. I have the seat with me so there is a good chance the bike is seatless. Please call Ryan at 646.548.4700 if you see it. Thank you.

Hi,

I had my brand new bike stolen last night, and I’d appreciate it if you could post this on the blog.

My bike was a Giant Boulder SE for Women, size Medium (2010). It is white with orange stripes on the frame, and orange handlebars. It looks pretty shiny and new – i didn’t even get to ride it yet. Left it in the building for about 6 hours and it was gone when i got home!

The bike was locked to a stairwell on the first floor of my apartment building. It was a pretty cheap lock and the thief just smashed it apart, though I’m not sure how he got in the building. The building is on Hooper St. between Marcy and Lee Ave in South Williamsburg.

I was pretty crushed to lose it. If you’ve seen it anywhere please let me know, I’d be truly grateful.

Thanks
any info contact: boucher.allison@gmail.com

Then
Spike, front man of classic East Village punk band Sewage, got his bike stolen and he needs it for messenger work.

Stolen ave a and 7th at rays candy
Has sewage stickers on it.
Message from Chris Ryan of Teamspider. There is also a partial serial number on it-

Got this message from Leonard Jones who had parts of his bike jacked–Be on the look out!

I know it’s not a full stolen bike, but I figured I’d email you about
this anyway. I work at NYU Medical Center on 33rd and 1st Ave and
yesterday at about 2:45, the fork was stolen off my bike, right
outside the hospital. It’s a red Carbon-2 road fork w/ 1 white stripe
fit for a 700×23 wheel. This has been a big problem at this hospital,
with my coworker having his mountain bike fork and seat post stolen just
a few days ago and me losing a rear wheel 2 months ago (now I only
lock w/ my kryptonite chain). With awful security camera placement, a
bike shed that has a 2+ yr waiting list for commuters, and a general
apathy towards bike theft on the part of hospital security, those of
us who ride to work sort of have our hands tied. If by any chance you
come across or hear through the grapevine of a lot of forks being
sold, we’d be really grateful for a heads up. Also, any
recommendations you might have regarding encouraging awareness of
cyclist commuter needs in the workplace, or what places to keep an eye
on for stolen parts will be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Leonard Jones

Hi there…

I’d really like to list my bike on Bike Blog NYC.. not sure how it’s done..

My bike was stolen from my building in Fort Greene yesterday and since it’s a pretty distinctive looking, I’ve been trying to seed its description with all the right people in hopes that someone will spot it…

But this bike, for a host of reasons, means a great great deal to me. I keep trying to remind myself that it’s just a bunch of metal and rubber, but I feel like I lost a child or a pet. It was my first build, and is my first loss. I’m sure you can relate. So if you could keep an eye/ear out for it, I would be so very grateful…

It’s a royal blue single speed Gazelle Champion Mondial, 56cm, with white wheelset/crank and black mustache handlebars w/ brakes. It has black wraps and a black seat. It also has a couple nicks on the top tube near the seat.
Gothamist has been all over this story about how the NYPD stole all the bikes on Houston Street because they thought their might be used as bombs. It is a police precedence to remove bikes along the route of a presidential motorcade…its just the way they went about it, showing a continued lack of respect for the New Yorkers and their property.

One owner is not to happy that his $150.00 lock was cut and is $900.00 bike was damaged. He is intending to sue the city.

Thanks to Gothamist for giving a shit about this and for doing some research. They made a few phone calls and got the police to admit where the stolen bikes were from the Houston Street Earth Day debacle.
(Photo from Martha Cooper on Gothamist)

Find out the info here: Gothamist.com

It still doesn’t answer the question: Why did they remove the bikes in the first place and why the NYPD feels so threatened by bicycles in the city.

Turns out they do have a policy of removing bikes when motorcades are in the area and they did put up signs the night before. The signs however, only say…No Parking. Most people would interpret that as applying to motor vehicles.

It truly is in bad taste and reflects the NYPD’s disrespect for its citizens, especially those who ride bicycles.

If you had a bicycle taken on Houston Street, please get in touch with me. Also twitter any information with the hashtag #stolenbike.

I’ve been trying to have space on my blog for people to post when they’ve had a bike stolen. Well this one may take the cake.

As our mayor was in Time’s Square celebrating the 40th anniversary of Earth Day:

His goon squad, the NYPD was stealing bikes on Houston street because of some supposed substantial threat of “pipe bombs” in bicycles. President Obama was here in NYC and his motorcade was going down Houston…so logically the cops cut locks and took all the bikes parked there.

The story first broke on this blog: thisisfyf.com

Then later appeared on Gothamist.com

If you have had your bike STOLEN, by the NYPD on Houston St. please contact me so we can figure out how to get it back!! Then we can figure out how to tell Bloomberg what an un-environmental hypocrite A-Hole he is…So glad he bought himself a third term.

Happy Earth Day NYC. I think this shows how much Bloomberg and the NYPD care about the planet.
