Follow Friday with Urban Velo

In their never ending quest to aggregate the world wide social network-o-sphere Urban Velo came up with a clever idea.

Starting today, it’s Follow Friday, where they will highlight instagramers worth following for their coverage of bicycle culture.

Check it out: here.

Friday Night Videos…from Russia with…Bike Videos.

Here’s a late addition of Video Friday.

I know you’ll all watching the Sochi Olympics waiting for something like this to happen:
YouTube:

There’s nothing like watching an opening ceremony of an Olympic event and see a host countries history depicted through Cirque du Soleil looking performers in unitards.

Perhaps we will feel the unity and the world coming together with Russian Police hoping to “Get Lucky.

I dunno, seems a little flamboyant to me…especially with Russia so particular about sexual preference.
We did get introduced to this year’s Olympic mascots:
20140207-223746.jpg
(left to right) Fabulous Bunny, Stray(f) the Dog and Pussy Cat Tiger Riot.

In case you’ve missed the action here is a 2 hour special of pre-event coverage by Russian TV.

I know, poor Russia is getting picked on, but I really like the take on Gawker’s sports site Deadspin:

The Haters Guide to the Sochi Games.

If your not interested in obscure winter sports festival hosted by a corrupt country with an abysmal record on human rights…then let’s watch bike videos.

Here is some better sports competition: American Style!!

State Bicycle has long had one of the more affordable FGFS complete bikes out there, with this being the latest incarnation, the $579 Shockwave. We reviewed the similar Massacre from State back in May 2012.

Excellent job this year, CX Hairs!

Here we go with some videos for your Friday:

Title: Pure Fix in NYC
Pure Fix cycles makes a durable, affordable urban commuter. They even make bikes that glow in the dark…But let’s talk about the light, it’s starting to warm up here in NYC. More from Pure Fix:
Weather’s warming in New York, and you know what that means…bring out the bikes! The Oscar, X-Ray, and a little custom color cruising through our favorite city east of the Mississipp’. Check it!

Title: Chrome and Crosby Press

It’s not that Chrome needs OUR help, but I really enjoy this interview video and the straightforward, no crap style of Chrome president Steve McCallion. There aren’t too many companies that have been around so long, are so successful, and appeal to such a broad audience, yet have retained the spirit of their humble beginnings. Steve seems to embody the Chrome brand as if it’s an extension of his personality. And we all know they don’t make crappy bags either. I have yet to visit a Chrome storefront, but I’ll certainly make the trip should I be close enough. Or, hey Steve, wanna open one in Indianapolis?

Title: Red Hook Crit Art Installation
Seen on: Urban Velo
Artist, Eric Corriel, was asked to create an installation for this year’s Red Hook Crit that just went down in Brooklyn. Last year he projected an animation onto a warehouse wall, but this year wanted to combine the projection with the riders themselves. As Corriel describes his piece,

“I was first asked to participate in the Red Hook Crit in 2012 and for that iteration I projected an animated abstraction of a bicycle race onto a warehouse. For 2013 I removed all elements of abstraction and put my art in direct contact with the race participants and projected onto (them and) the track itself. Instead of the art being about its subject, now it’s an inseparable part of it.”

See all of Corriel’s work here.

Here we go again:

Title: Hoodride Cycles
Seen on: Urban Velo
I love this little bio of Derrick in Phoenix who was annoyed with the soul-sucking red tape of running a business, so decided to just fix rides out of his backyard in an almost purposefully looking ramshackle garage. He talks about the stresses of doing it for the love, but also the value and reward of “localism”. Good on you Derrick.

Title: One Day in April-Documentary on the little 500-trailer.
Seen on: Urban Velo
The 2013 Little 500
qualifications took place in Bloomington, Indiana yesterday, just before the weather turned stupid and started snowing all over the place. With that in mind (the race, not the weather), this project needs one last push to come to fruition. The documentary, One Day in April, follows four teams as they prepare for this year’s Little 500 race, showing their passion and dedication to extremely amateur racing, the surprisingly hilly and beautiful terrain in Southern Indiana, along with the storied history of this unparalleled race. Many of you probably know the race primarily through the movie Breaking Away or our recent article in Issue 32, but this documentary gives a direct and intimate portrayal of the race’s story up to this point.

There are only 3 days left for the video to reach funding and incentives start with free digital downloads, t-shirts, photos, etc.

Here are some videos to warm you up in the cold frigid weather.

St Louis Lock-In Pinata Video
Seen on: Urban Velo
The St Louis Bike Polo Lock-In was this past weekend, featuring another level of 24 hour indoor polo party mayhem. This was my third trip to this one of a kind event, and it gets better every time even if this year the sleep deprivation got the best of me and I found myself curled up in the back of a rental Kia at 4 am. This is video of the 4th annual pinata smashing that happens around 1 am, giving but a taste of the party. Until next year kids.

State Bicycle Co. Team Issue Helmet by Lazer
Seen on: Urban Velo
Now that’s a good lookin’ helmet. Manufactured by Lazer, the State Bicycle Co. team issue helmet weighs in at 290 grams with 16 vents and they still manage to slap a good lookin’ logo on that thing. I’ve worn a Lazer helmet before and am glad to say it fit my weirdly small adult head just fine, while working for normal sized heads all the same.

You can buy the helmet for $69.99 on the State site.

Ah yes, those aged hipsters on Brompton’s or at least the aged being so aged they now look like hipsters. Anyways, Brompton hosted an Urban Challengein Milano complete with a folding contest, some sort of crashing into boxes finale and other tweedtastic camaraderie. It’s like alleycat culture for the retired. Nah, it actually looks like a good time, if clown bikes are your thing. I kid, I kid.

Pocket full of Kryptonite–Lock(s) giveaway on twitter and instagram

About the title of this post==I mean who doesn’t miss the Spin Doctors?

I’ve only had two bikes stolen (that were locked to a structure or object) within the 21 years I’ve been riding in NYC. Neither of which have been with a Kryptonite lock, which has been a leader in bike security for decades. This is not to say there aren’t other reliable manufactures out there or that not having this particular brand was the only reason my bikes were stolen. Rather it’s been the name brand I’ve always gravitated towards and been the most readily available in NYC. When I was a messenger in the early 90′s the insider street knowledge was you either had the big Kyrptonite chain & lock or your bike got stolen. They’ve also been super active on the bike culture front and provided lots of free prizes for alleycat races and other events.

Kryptonite’s generosity trickled down to little ol me and they recently sent me two care packages.

The first came when I inquired about getting spare keys for the five chains and u-locks I have owned for years. I’ve lost one to many key sets in the past and didn’t want to be caught unable to get my locks open.

Kryptonite responded with full spare sets and all they needed was the numbers written on each key. (word of advice–write these numbers down or register on-line)

The care package included a ton of stickers, a water bottle, their new transit H-Bar handlebar mount and a limited edition 40th anniversary U-lock.
I was really excited about their evolution series 4 Mini-5 U-Lock, which has come out in limited supply to celebrate 40 years of bike security perfection.

This is the same trusted lock as the as part of their evolution series (the signature orange color) with 13mm hardened steel shackle that slides into one end of the crossbar. The lock has a small key hole which is strategically placed in a reinforced cuff so as not to be easily pried upon by thieves. Weighing 770g or 2.1 pounds, this is the smallest lock in the series. It’s perfect for slipping in a back pocket or in a u-lock holder on the belt of a hip pouch (Fabrichorse.com) I use this lock to secure my back wheel to the frame. Its not long enough to fit around a standard NYC street sign and go through the frame and front wheel so it’s definitely used as a secondary lock. They do however make longer models to accommodate frame and wheel, as well as bigger locking options. Many urban riders only want to carry u-locks to avoid more bulky chains.
mini ulock 1

The lock riding hipside or sticking out of a back pocket has become an icon of urban bike fashion and is such a classic design that Kryptonite’s K-4 lock is on permanent display in the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) design collection. I felt rather nostalgic (or maybe old) that this was an anniversary edition with a flashy ruby red color on the crossbar.

Check out contest details on the next page.

Video Friday, 10/19/12

Videos! Yeah. To help with the doldrums of Friday.

Title: Crosstown Couriers
Seen on: Urban Velo
Rudy Gonzalez of Cowtown Couriers was featured in Urban Velo #33′s feature story, Pushing Beyond The Envelope about the changing face of the bicycle courier industry. This video was shot to show the Cowtown Courier direct to consumer food delivery service in action, adding some video context to the story and looking nothing like the typical image of legal documents being rushed here and there in downtown traffic.

Title: Taliah Lempert
Seen on: Urban Velo
If you’ve been in the urban cycling scene for any time at all, you’ve undoubtedly stumbled across some of Taliah Lempert’s bicycle paintings. Her work has adorned magazine and book covers, gallery walls and more. Lempert is commissioned to paint people’s individual rides, which she keeps in her studio as she works on them instead of painting from photos. She says a painting might take her a couple weeks to finish as she painstakingly reproduces the rides in her style.

See more of her work here.

Title: Lance Armstrong Nike Parody
Seen on: Urban Velo
I guess Radioshack won’t be asking me to donate a dollar to livestrong any more when I buy cheap electronics. Looks like sponsors like the shack and Nike have pulled the plug on their now disgraced hero, Lance Armstrong, since the recent US Anti-doping Agency has labeled him a “cheater.” Urban Velo reminds us of this parody video that rings more true than ever.
