Title: Chrome and Crosby Press
Seen on: Urban Velo
It’s not that Chrome needs OUR help, but I really enjoy this interview video and the straightforward, no crap style of Chrome president Steve McCallion. There aren’t too many companies that have been around so long, are so successful, and appeal to such a broad audience, yet have retained the spirit of their humble beginnings. Steve seems to embody the Chrome brand as if it’s an extension of his personality. And we all know they don’t make crappy bags either. I have yet to visit a Chrome storefront, but I’ll certainly make the trip should I be close enough. Or, hey Steve, wanna open one in Indianapolis?

Title: Red Hook Crit Art Installation
Seen on: Urban Velo
Artist, Eric Corriel, was asked to create an installation for this year’s Red Hook Crit that just went down in Brooklyn. Last year he projected an animation onto a warehouse wall, but this year wanted to combine the projection with the riders themselves. As Corriel describes his piece,

“I was first asked to participate in the Red Hook Crit in 2012 and for that iteration I projected an animated abstraction of a bicycle race onto a warehouse. For 2013 I removed all elements of abstraction and put my art in direct contact with the race participants and projected onto (them and) the track itself. Instead of the art being about its subject, now it’s an inseparable part of it.”

See all of Corriel’s work here.

Video Friday-the Ides of March-3/15/13

Beware the Ides of March and the videos of Friday.

Title: Lucas Brunelle-Renegades of the Road

An excerpt from the master of the helmet camera, racer Lucas Brunelle-his documentary “line of sight.” Just in time for Monster Track 14, which Lucas has video taped like no other. Here is the NYC cut.

Title: How the Race was Won-Nice-Paris 2013
Seen on: Urbancyclistworldwide
You could argue it was the lesser of the two March one-week stage races this year, but that’s fine. A decent sprint or two, a ton of lead changes, nice tactical riding on occasion and more than a few of the typical stage race antics. Richie Porte confirming the Maglia Rosa of 2010 was no fluke, and Andrew Talansky showing he has the energy, and at least some of the guile, to be competitive at the top tier of the sport. Good times.

Title: Breakin L.A. | U.S. trailer
Seen on: Urbancyclistworldwide
A group of bicycle aficionados from Hamburg St. Pauli made their way to break-in the city of Los Angeles. During 12 days the group scattered the city in all cardinal directions. They cruised through the barrios of East LA, blazed to the beaches of Venice and ascended the Hollywood Hills. They worked as volunteers at the Midnight Mission on skid row to bring attention to the 15,000 homeless people, who are the result of gentrification in LA.
They discovered a velodrome in the valley and self-tested their consciousness at the LA Gun Club. During the trip they met with a great variety of local riders. Although the bike scene in the capital of cars is relatively small, their skills are top notch. In the end the group attempted to reconquer the ecological desert of Los Angeles in order to survive evolutionary pressures, such as distances and traffic.

Video Fridays–New in 2013

Here are some videos to warm you up in the cold frigid weather.

St Louis Lock-In Pinata Video
Seen on: Urban Velo
The St Louis Bike Polo Lock-In was this past weekend, featuring another level of 24 hour indoor polo party mayhem. This was my third trip to this one of a kind event, and it gets better every time even if this year the sleep deprivation got the best of me and I found myself curled up in the back of a rental Kia at 4 am. This is video of the 4th annual pinata smashing that happens around 1 am, giving but a taste of the party. Until next year kids.

InRoads Trailer

State Bicycle Co. Team Issue Helmet by Lazer
Seen on: Urban Velo
Now that’s a good lookin’ helmet. Manufactured by Lazer, the State Bicycle Co. team issue helmet weighs in at 290 grams with 16 vents and they still manage to slap a good lookin’ logo on that thing. I’ve worn a Lazer helmet before and am glad to say it fit my weirdly small adult head just fine, while working for normal sized heads all the same.

You can buy the helmet for $69.99 on the State site.

Are YOU Cyclist?
Seen on: Urban Velo
Here’s an amusing video made by the shop Bike n Hike out of Portland. I get the feeling they’re going the Portlandia route on this one (a stereotype feedback loop?), but hey, it’s more amusing than the bike shop commercials in my neck of the woods.

Profiles are back…the Bike Nerd

Back in the day, I used to do profiles of other bicycle blogs where I would send out questions, got back the answers and then post it up as if I actually did an interview with these people. Ok, I was borrowing from a time honored tradition of zines.

I started this back in [...]
